Control in Golf – Knowledge paves the way..

If you understand how to generate and accelerate power while also being aware of clubface closure, you unlock the potential for control in golf.

This is the best feeling, no matter which golf swing system you follow.

The Impact Area – The Decider of Golf

You need to answer one question for yourself to achieve potential for control – How do you stimulate the clubface to keep square at impact?

There are many answers to this question that belongs to better golf:

  • In the modern more baseball like swing you actually delay the release of the clubhead and move through the impact area through rotation. This fits a small sub set of very gifted players (likely with baseball background).
  • Another more modern style is to close down your blade in the backswing and then extend your trail arm through the shot (this would be MORAD inspired patterns). Your control is basically down to your trail arm extension.
  • The old school swinging motion, that I teach, performs control through directing the power in the clubhead in a very smart way which creates a stable face-path relationship in the impact area. This comes with the advantage of effortless power and a smooth motion. The FMM Swing is built on the same principles used by the old greats—Snead, Hogan, Thomson, Nicklaus, and Watson. Over time, this approach has also been seen in players like Ian Woosnam, Colin Montgomery, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Fred Couples, early Tiger Woods, early Rory McIlroy, and today’s stars like Scheffler and Schauffele.

Ultimately – It’s Down to Knowledge

There’s no way around it. Unless you figured out control and the impact area when you were a kid and “just master it” you need to understand it first and THEN master it. There’s no better feeling then being somewhat in control of your swing and your ball striking.
