We all seek consistency and control in the golf swing.

Control is likely the biggest contributor to why our motion is created the way it is.

Most golfers, however, lack proper use of the complete swing arc — and I’d say control itself is directly responsible for that.

When we try too hard to control the impact area — and believe that perfect golf shots are achievable through sheer control — we actually end up creating less control.

With a complete feeling of control comes limitation through the impact zone. Technically speaking, the more we aim to control, the more we lose the natural advantages of a full follow through.

This article is mostly referring to the Big Arc Swinger pattern I educate about. Inspirations from Nicklaus all the way to Woods and the modern Scheffler.

The Follow Through — or Complete Journey — Advantage

When we truly commit to finishing our motion, we naturally inspire the impact area to have positive hand momentum through it.

This not only feels great — it also keeps the wrists from breaking down. In other words: it helps us avoid the detrimental long left miss.

A Different Perception of Control

If you let go of controlling the impact and instead focus on completing the full motion, you’ll find your swing becomes more repeatable and reliable.

The brain receives clear coordinates and fills in the gap at the intersection of the downswing and follow-through — the impact area. Because the momentum of the hands continues, the left miss disappears, and your game becomes more one-dimensional and predictable — in the best way possible.

The Confidence Builder

Perhaps the biggest benefit of this mindset is how good it feels. It builds confidence. You stand over the ball knowing your consistency comes from clarity of intention, not from manipulation. You understand that control is a byproduct of a repeatable, flowing motion. So try it out: Let go of control — and focus on completing the full motion instead.
